Having A Guilt-Free Thanksgiving.

vtfwvtrmujlwqzutnwpdt5rmckbkhx6wu8kifppv7j9rib5qrllig1emwgvvqmde-f

As we all know who celebrate Thanksgiving, it’s right around the corner. Thanksgiving should be a time to be thankful for the people and things in your life, and to spend that time with loved ones, but for a lot of us it has become something surround with angst. This feeling usually comes after (or during) having the big meal, and stuffing ourselves to the brim. In this post I am not going to tell you to make a super healthy meal or to avoid all your favorites. Because it is a such a problem for so many people to think they have to avoid food to feel good and healthy. When we try to fill up on tasteless, low-calorie food we deny ourselves of the singular, REAL, thing.

The key to having a Thanksgiving without guilt is to see food as the sacred thing which it is. It’s essential, not just for Thanksgiving, but all meals you eat, to savor each bite, eat slowly, and eat the real thing. Try eating a smaller portion of a substantial, truly nourishing meal of REAL food, REAL food that you actually want. See how you feel…see how you appreciate each bite so much more. See how you actually TASTE your food. See how you are not thinking about the meal but more so the conversation. See how your stomach doesn’t bloat and ache. See how YOU are in control of your body and how you feel.

Try taking a small bite, not a forkful of all the food on your plate-that will confuse and jumble your tastebuds, denying you from truly tasting your food. Chew that food slowly, and after you’ve swallowed pay attention to smell, texture, taste. Put down your fork. Have a drink of water. Talk to people, Listen.Ok, ok I know this may sound crazy to people or even seem like an aggravating way of eating to some of you. To us, this way of eating is so foreign, it is customary in many cultures, cultures where the population has a low obesity rate and longer-living citizens. When eating this way, you actually appreciate your food, you taste your food, you realize you don’t need as much substance to feel satisfied.

The last point I want to discuss is treating yourself, and eating what you want without guilt. So many of us feel GUILTY when we eat what we are craving, it could be pasta or a biscotti or a cookie. When you think about how “naughty” you’re being and how “bad” you’ll feel after you eat it, it COMPLETELY BLOCKS you from enjoying what you’re consuming. Why not try eating a small portion of what you really want and not feeling guilty. American women associate eating with sin and guilt. We should eat and prepare food with pleasure. But also not rely solely on food for pleasure.

This is your sign to feel enough- to know you are enough, to know you are in control, and to strive for balance.

Until next time,

Claire

What diet should i be eating? (listening to your body)

Hello friends! I think all of us, especially those more connected to their health, ask ourselves this question at many points in our lives. All around us, are adverts for ‘getting skinny quick’, ‘the ab diet’, ‘try this new diet!’. It follows us everywhere. There is a mass of diets, and people doing them who claim it is, ‘their holy grail’, ‘everyone should be eating this way’, ‘this diet has changed my life’, etc. Paleo, Gluten-Free, Vegan, Vegetarian, Raw Vegan, Atkins, Raw-Till-4, and an overwhelming amount of others. While, yes, for some people these ways of eating makes sparks fly and heals them, for others, they feel as if the way their eating isn’t good enough. That they have to eat this way, that what they are currently doing is wrong. The truth is that, genetically, we are all different. Our bodies function in different ways, our gut’s are all built differently, we all have different tolerances. So, to be saying “everyone should be Paleo” or “humans should never eat animal products”, or “we all should never eat gluten” is just wrong. For some people, they will strive, and others will be left feeling tired, gassy, and confused. Go ahead, try what you will, but just because someone said that it worked for them, does not mean it will work for you.

Listen to your body, it knows what is best. There is a phrase, “listen to your gut”, literally, listen to your gut. If your stomach hurts and you feel tired after eating, experiment, figure out what’s wrong! I say it’s much better to start with the basics: fruit, veg, grains, lean meats, legumes, nuts/seeds, beans. Go from there, see how your body reacts to each food. If your taste buds are satisfied, your gut feels fine, and you are happy about what you’re eating, there is no need to go and change the way you eat!

Until next time,

Starting A Healthy Lifestyle: The Basics

This post is for people who are just getting into health and fitness. I will be doing a post soon for people who are already living a healthy lifestyle and want to amp it up. tumblr_mn5p6xftlS1s8kq4zo1_400

  1. Change you mindset. This is not a “diet”, it’s a lifestyle. When you choose to live a healthy lifestyle it is all about balance. Don’t dread eating a healthy meal, make every single meal you eat flavor packed and delicious. You can have the things you like, such as brownies and burgers, but in moderation. One bad meal will not make you unhealthy just like one good meal will not make you healthy.
  2. Water. The best advice I have for this is: CHUG! If you think you’re drinking enough water, drink more. Your body is 60% water. YOU.NEED.WATER!! Water helps with literally everything in your life. When you go out to eat, get water. When you’re at home, drink water. When you’re at work or school, bring water. Always be drinking water. To help with this, get at least a 32 oz reusable water bottle to bring and fill up wherever you are. tumblr_mon7n7LG111rltj0eo1_500
  3. Eat clean, lean, and green. This is a good rule of thumb with healthy eating. Eat lean protein like fish, chicken, eggs, nuts, and yogurt. Eat clean and green foods that fuel your body like vegetables, fruits, and good-for-you grains like quinoa. Strive to eat the least amount of processed foods as possible. Swap out a regular salad dressing(s) for olive oil and lime. If you stick to this moto of “clean, lean and green”, you will be on the road to success.
  4. Sleep. Now a days a lot of people consider sleep a luxury, not a priority. You need to make sleep a priority. This does not mean getting 6 hours of sleep on the weekdays and sleeping until three on the weekends (i am guilty of this). Get everything done earlier, stop eating and turn off electronics a couple hours before bed, drink something soothing like tea and read a book to help you relax. If you have trouble settling your mind before bed, there are these relaxing chewable tablets called “Tranquil Sleep” that really help. You can buy them here: http://www.amazon.com/Natural-Factors-Stress-Relax-Tranquil-Chewable/dp/B000OBY4MU
  5. Stay Active. We were born with limbs, and bones, and muscles…our body’s want to move! So get up and move that body of yours. Walk, run, box, jump rope, dance, swim, lift, hike, stretch, bike…just go out into the world, sweat, and move your wonderful body. tumblr_m965q7tyAa1rnhmhjo1_500

I hope my advice helps you, and remember: this is a lifestyle not a diet.

Until next time,

Claire

Thanksgiving is round the corner…wow, that’s freaky to think about. For my “last minute” people, this is the post for you. These recipes are quick and delicious. Instead of the classic green beans, turkey, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and potatoes, I decided to create a fun twist on the classic Thanksgiving dinner. Warm-Rosemary-Apple-Wheatberry-Salad_04

What’s on the menu:

Salad: I love wheatberry’s. They are a great staple to have in your pantry and are extremely versitile.

Soup: Soup is nice to have on Thanksgiving because it is a bunch of flavors combined into a liquid. I love how soup keep you full, but not too full.

Drink: This cranberry, pomegranate, and green tea spritzer will sure impress your guests (and yourself!) Feel free to add alcohol of so desired.

Dessert bars: Alas, my favorite part of Thanksgiving, or any day for that matter, dessert. I recently made these after sampling them in Williams Sonoma. These pumpkin bars can simply be described as a more flavorful version of pumpkin pie, in bar form.
